A Co-op store in Honley, West Yorkshire was subject to a blaze after efforts from failing thieves to break into an ATM.

Ram-raiders attempted to steal a cash machine from the Co-op store using an Audi Q7 to ram into the store, in turn causing a blaze that engulfed “100% of the ground floor” said West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

West Yorkshire Police have reported: “The suspects made off empty-handed. The vehicle has since been recovered.

A Co-op spokesman confirmed “there was an attempted attach on the ATM” which “resulted in a fire”.

“Fortunately, no store colleagues or customers were present at the time,” the spokesman added.

“CCTV footage has been shared with the police, who are investigating, and we would ask anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Local public services are tasked with the immediate response to the fire call, to combat the fire and ensure the safety of people in the area. However, what steps do Co-op take to recover from these incidents?

In this instance, the Co-op store in Honley happened to be located opposite an assisted living facility for older people, many of whom would have difficulty getting around to do their shopping. Therefore, their local Co-op store was relied on heavily for their daily essentials.

True to its reputation as a people-friendly franchise, Co-op took immediate action in providing local people with access to alternative Co-op stores via taxi and bus, covering the costs by knocking it off their bill at the checkout. However, this is not ideal for Co-op and the cost could simply not be justified long-term.

Fortunately, the Rapid Retail team were on hand over the festive break to react fast, providing a solution for the Honley store. As can be found across the country during store closures, Rapid Retail’s fleet of portable supermarkets was utilised to give customers a place to shop with all the essentials.

During store closures for refurbishment and similar unforeseen circumstances, these purpose-built portable stores provide all the essential elements of a scaled-down supermarket – complete with security features, refrigerated and ambient shelving, power, lighting, heating and much more.
