A weekend of heavy metal at the Stade de France with Metallica headlining as part of their 2019 world tour.
The Stade de France, over its 25 year history, has played host to a plethora of huge events – Champions League finals, IAAF World Championships, Rugby World Cup, the UEFA Euro 2016 and in 2024, the Paris Summer Olympics. Not to mention being home to the 2018 World Cup winning French national football team. So of course when it comes to music, only the biggest and best have the privilege of occupying the stage.
For those who don’t know, Metallica is a heavy metal rock band from America, formed in LA in 1981. ‘Metallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first five albums. The band’s third album, Master of Puppets (1986), was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums; its eponymous fifth album, Metallica (1991), the band’s first to root predominantly in heavy metal, appealed to a more mainstream audience, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era. After experimenting with different genres and directions in subsequent releases, the band returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic (2008), which drew similar praise to that of the band’s earlier albums.’ – from Wikipedia.
So, after 28 years of rocking (and equal parts rolling), Metallica still maintain a loyal fanbase across the globe, large enough to justify headlining at one of the most prestigious venues across Europe. Pretty impressive, right?
Perhaps more impressive are the merchandise revenue numbers… With Rapid Retail’s flagship Event Superstore on lead – armed to the teeth with official Metallica gear – eager fans were able to get their merchandise with efficiency and ease, in turn generating revenue of over €50,000 on the day.
